CERRO GORDO– West Columbus scored 7 runs in the 1st inning and went on to defeat Elizabethtown 13-3 Tuesday in Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball action.
The Cougars, now 0-2 in ‘AA’ Division play and 1-4 overall, will host Whiteville Central Wednesday. West Columbus will visit East Columbus Wednesday.
Jayden Lewis and Jayden Byrd smacked singles in the Cougar 1st inning, and Lewis stole 2 bases and scored for an early 1-0 lead.
The Warriors answered with 7 runs on 4 walks, 2 hits, an error and a hit batter. West tacked on 2 runs in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd inning.
Trey Wilson reached on an error in the Cougar 3rd inning, and Chandler Wall knocked him in with a hit. Byrd walked, stole 2 bases and scored the final Elizabethtown run in the 4th inning.
Wall batted 2-for-3 with a triple and a run batted in. Lewis, Byrd and Carter added 1 hit each. Wilson, Lewis and Byrd scored runs.
Damian Maynor started on the mound for Elizabethtown and allowed 8 runs on 5 walks and 2 hits in 1-plus innings while striking out 1. Wall relieved and pitched the final 3 innings allowing 5 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2.
