LAKE WACCAMAW – East Columbus scored in the final minutes and edged Bladenboro 38-36 Tuesday night in Waccamaw Middle School Conference football action.

The Bulldogs built a 30-14 lead before the Hawks rallied and tied the game 30-30. The game wasn’t tied for long as Bladenboro’s Elijah McCollum fielded the East kickoff and raced 68 yards to put the Bulldogs back on top 36-30 with 2:41 left to play.

The Hawks answered with a drive for the tying touchdown, then their big running back bulled into the end zone for the winning conversion.

McCollum had returned an earlier kickoff 71 yards for a Bulldog touchdown. Teammate Kendell Lesane broke loose on touchdown runs of 50 and 45 yards for Bladenboro.

Justin Spaulding sprinted 37 yards for a Bladenboro touchdown and also banged into the end zone for a 2-point conversion. Bulldog quarterback Hunter Hester ran for a touchdown and passed for a 2-point conversion. Teammate Robert McKoy ran for a 2-point conversion.

The Bulldogs will travel to Whiteville Central next Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game.
