CERRO GORDO – Kamyra McDowell and Ellen Battle sparked a 15-0 closing blitz that rallied Elizabethtown to a 23-22 victory Thursday over West Columbus that clinched a share of the Waccamaw Middle School Conference ‘AA’ Division girls’ basketball championship for the Lady Cougars.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Elizabethtown squad raised their record to 6-2 in league play and 8-5 overall. The Lady Cougars finish their season as co-champions along with Whiteville Central who also posted a 6-2 record.

Ten points from Demya Powell and 8 from Skylah Collins had sparked the West Lady Warriors to a 22-8 lead on Collins’ bucket early in the final quarter. McDowell threw in 2 baskets and a free throw, and Battle tossed in 2 baskets. Sana’a Singletary sank 2 free throws, and Alayah Powell and Aaliyah Monroe popped in baskets during the winning Elizabethtown run.

Monroe and Battle topped the Elizabethtown scoring list with 6 points each, and McDowell followed with 5 points. Monroe had kept the Lady Cougars close in the 1st period with a pair of baskets, and Battle and Harmony Richardson scored a basket each.

“Coach Ursula Wooten did a great job for us subbing the girls in at the right time,” said Coach Owens.
