ELIZABETHTOWN – Sana’a Singletary and Ellen Battle scored 9 points each Thursday to lead Elizabethtown’s Lady Cougars to a 27-17 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls’ basketball victory over Whiteville Central.
Singletary worked the paint for a pair of 1st period baskets, and Mariah Ward dropped in a bucket as the Lady Cougars edged ahead 6-5. Battle and Aaliyah Monroe popped in baskets in the 2nd quarter, and Singletary and Arian Fields sank free throws to give Elizabethtown a 12-6 halftime lead.
Battle threw in 2 baskets and a free throw in the 3rd quarter, and Singletary and Ward added baskets as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 21-11.
Monroe and Battle popped in baskets in the final period, and Singletary connected on a pair of free throws. Ward and Monroe finished with 4 points each for the winners. M. Shaw led Central with 10 points.
Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars, now 2-0 in league play and 3-2 overall, will travel to Tar Heel Thursday.
