TAR HEEL — Elizabethtown’s inside duo of Sana’a Singletary and Ellen Battle combined for 26 points Thursday to lead the Lady Cougars to a 39-16 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars raised their record to 6-1 and will host Willliams Township Tuesday. Tar Heel, now 0-6, will travel to Whiteville Central.

Singletary and Battle shared scoring honors for Elizabethtown with 13 points each, and teammate Zariyahh Riddy chipped in with 6 points. Abigail Dew poured in a game-high 14 points for Tar Heel.

Battle sparked the Lady Cougars to an early 16-3 lead with 3 baskets and a free throw. Singletary nailed a 3-point shot, another basket and a free throw, and Riddy popped in a basket and a free throw. Dew drilled in a 3-point shot for the Lady Panther points.

Dew bombed in another 3-pointer and sank 3 free throws in the 2nd period. Battle and Alexandra Riveria tossed in baskets to keep the Lady Cougars up 20-9 at halftime.

Battle and Singletary powered in baskets in the 3rd quarter, and Morgan Hammon and Racquel Whittington sank free throws to push the lead to 26-11. Dew cashed in a pair of foul shots for the Tar Heel points.

Singletary worked the paint for 2 baskets and a free throw in the final period. Riddy buried a 3-point shot, and Battle and Shamairrha McEchen added a basket each. Teammate Kaitlyn Chambers tacked on a free throw. Dew connected on 3 more free throws in the 4th quarter, and Savannah Wooten pumped in a basket for Tar Heel.
