ELIZABETHTOWN — Ellen Battle controlled the inside play and filled up the rims with 20 points Monday to lead Elizabethtown to a 41-12 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls’ basketball victory over West Columbus.

Battle worked the paint for 3 early baskets, and teammate Morgan Hammon tossed in a basket as the Lady Cougars raced to an 8-0 lead. Teammate Sana’a Singletary banged in a pair of baskets then buried a 3-point shot in the 2nd quarter. Battle, Hammon and Racquel Whittington threw in a basket each as the Elizabethtown lead grew to 21-7 at halftime.

Battle took charge in the 3rd period pouring in 4 baskets. Singletary dropped in 2 more baskets as the lead grew to 33-12. Battle popped in 2 more baskets in the final quarter, and teammates Zariyahh Riddy and Shamairrha McCechen flipped in a basket each.

Singletary finished with 11 points for the winners, and Hammon added 4. Alaina Spencer drilled in a 3-point shot and led the Lady Warrior scoring with 3 points.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars, now 5-1, will visit Tar Heel Thursday. West Columbus will host East Columbus Thursday.
