Clarkton School of Discovery defeated Tar Heel 3-0 in Bladen Five Middle School Conference action at Elizabethtown by game scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 15-9.
Gracyn Martin started the first set with a thundering ace, then reeled off five more serving points including another ace. With the score 6-3, Khadijah Jones smashed a return for Clarkton’s seventh point.
Later, Jones used a soft touch to make the score 9-8 in favor of the Blue Devils. Ruth Ward went to the line with the score 11-10 Clarkton and broke the set wide open running off 13 straight service points with two aces. A side-out by Clarkton followed by an ace and a side-out by Tar Heel gave CSD the 25-12 win.
In the second set, Tar Heel opened up with a beautiful ace to the back corner, along with another service point before Sara Gargala scored on a nice return. Lily Lin then fired in three consecutive aces to make the score 4-2.
After a missed serve by Tar Heel, Gargala scored 7 service points with three big aces putting Clarkton out in front 12-3. Madison Cain would score CSD’s thirteenth point on a nice return and later added a service point for a 15-5 lead.
Ashley Hunsinger delivered 4 service points with one ace to extend the Lady Blue Devil lead to 21-8. After a missed serve by Clarkton and an ace from the Lady Panthers, Lin served out the set with four straight service points to give the Blue Devils the 25-10 win.
Martin fired in two aces to open the third set. Jones hit two more service points with one ace to give Clarkton an early 5-1 lead. After two service points from Cybil Campbell, which made the score 7-2, Tar Heel answered with three service points of their own to slice the lead to 7-6.
Adrienne Howell and Alyssa Futrell each scored an ace for the Lady Blue Devils to stretch the lead to 11-7. Ward hit two service points followed by a side-out from Tar Heel that capped the 15-9 victory for CSD.
Clarkton remains unbeaten at 3-0 and will battle unbeaten Elizabethtown Tuesday at 4 p.m. at East Arcadia.
