Spread the love

By Cara Beth Lewis

Calling all book-lovers! Today is your day! Today, August 9th is known as National Book Lovers Day. If you are a “bibliophile,” consider sitting back, relaxing, and falling into the pages of a good book to celebrate the occasion.

What is a bibliophile?

  • Bibliophile – a person who has a great appreciation for or collects books.

Books are a special part of the world in which we live. Whether you are an avid reader or not, a book has contributed to your life more than once. History, stories, recipes, philosophies, research, laws, memoirs, inspirations, and dreams live in the pages of books. Although the message is what is inside, the book itself is the vessel.

Here are some ways to celebrate, from Nationaldaycalender.com:

  • Shop for a new title to read or explore the shelves for one you would like to give.
  • Explore the shelves of used book stores.
  • Discover the world of online bookstores. Their stock includes a variety of subjects and collectible items, too.
  • Record a video of you reading a story for a child in your life.
  • Randomly give a book to someone.
  • Visit your public library and check out a favorite tome.

Bladen County’s Public Libraries offer services and more to both children and adults. Bladen County’s Library Director, Sheila Nance, shared this information with Bladen Online.

Pastries and Print Book club invites you to join them on the third Monday of each month at 3 pm in Bladen County Public Library’s Meeting Room for a time of fellowship and lively discussion. Refreshments will be served. This month’s book of choice is Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. For more information, contact Kim Wilson at Bladen County Public Library at (910) 862-6990 or kwilson@bladenco.org.

Want access to thousands of books at any time? Visit your local public library to receive your own library card! Fill out a registration card and show a valid picture ID with your current mailing address to apply for a library card. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who completes their registration. Your first card is free and can be used at any of the Bladen County Library locations. New cardholders can check out two books for three weeks. There is no limit thereafter as long as the account is in good standing. Library materials may be renewed for up to three additional loan periods if they are not reserved for another patron.

Bladen County Library Locations:

Bladen County Library Director Sheila Nance stated, “People who say they don’t like to read just haven’t found a book that interests them. If we can help them find that one book that hooks them, we will unlock a passion for reading that they never knew they had. And what better day to do that than on National Book Lovers Day?”
