A celebration was held this morning at the Curtis L. Brown Jr. Field Airport, in Elizabethtown to honor Mr. Mac Campbell, Jr.

“We are here today to recognize a native son of Bladen County,” said Grady Hunt with the North Carolina Board of Transportation. He explained the Bypass between N.C. 41 and N.C. 87 was will be named in Mr. Campbell’s honor.

In January of this year the Elizabethtown Town Council received a request for a resolution of support to the North Carolina Board of Transportation to name NC Highway 87 Bypass in honor of Mr. Mac Campbell, Jr., an Elizabethtown native.

Mr. Campbell was a transportation board member for eight years under former Gov. Mike Easley and was instrumental in getting an NCDOT call center located in Bladen County. The N.C. Board of Transportation approved the request for the dedication in May.

“No one has done more for Bladen County than Mac Campbell and I don’t know of anyone who has had a bigger impact on Bladen County than Mac Campbell,” Former Chief Deputy Secretary Dan DeVane said.

“Mac, this is your day,” DeVane added.

Mr. Campbell humbly took the floor saying, “It was a team effort.” He thanked many in the room for their assistance including his wife, Mayor Syliva Campbell and his other family members.

Highlights Mr. Campbell mentioned were being able to meet Andy Griffith and assisting with a roundabout at Campbell University to help keep students safe.

“The most important was the relationships and friendships,” Mr. Campbell stated.

He closed by saying, “I’m totally humbled. It’s got my name on it, but when you see the sign I would like for you to think about all the people with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.”
