George McLaney, Jr., 96, of Concord, NC passed away on June 27, 2017. He was born on December 19, 1920 in Atlanta, GA, the son of the late George McLaney and Julia Ellen Nesbitt McLaney.
George grew up in Norcross, GA and Rome, GA. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a BS degree in Industrial Management. He worked for Westinghouse Corp. before entering World War II. He served with the First Calvary Division in the South Pacific from 1944-1946. He invaded Leyte and Luzon in the Philippine Islands and did occupational duty in Japan. In 1946, he moved to Elizabethtown, NC where he operated and was president of Southern Pine Mills, a lumber manufacturing plant until 1959. He was lumber sales manager for Lee Lumber and Plywood from 1959-1961. He sold lumber for Sledge Lumber Corporation, John C. Shepherd Lumber Company and McLaney Lumber Company and resided in Charlotte, NC until 1974. He returned to Elizabethtown, NC and was secretary/treasurer of Cape Craftsman, Inc. and retired in 1983. He was a member of Hound Ears Club, Blowing Rock, NC and lived there in retirement.
George was a Rotarian for many years and a member of the Baptist Church. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher and Deacon. As a Trustee of Campbell University he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the President’s Medallion and also served on the Presidential Board of Advisors until 2008.
Mr. McLaney was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy Eunice Williamson McLaney. George was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn Melissa McLaney and Anne McLaney Goggin. He is survived by his daughters; Carol Anne Felts (Ronnie) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Julie Luiga (George) of Fernandina Beach, FL; Millie Chalk (Sam) of Morehead City, NC; and Melissa Smith (Robin) of Elkin, NC. He has ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Campbell University for the Dorothy Williamson and George McLaney Divinity School Scholarship or Education Scholarship established for students from Bladen County; Campbell University, PO Box 546, Buies Creek, NC, 27506.
The family will celebrate his life at the Elizabethtown Baptist Church, 1800 W. Broad Street, Elizabethtown, NC 28337 on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 11AM. The family will receive friends following the service.
