NC DOTDUNN – Emergency repairs are expected to start Friday, July 20, on the Interstate 95 South bridge over U.S. 421 in Dunn. An N.C. Department of Transportation crew on Wednesday discovered a steel beam on the bridge had been damaged when it was apparently struck by something traveling along U.S. 421. It is not known when the bridge was struck or what hit it.

The bridge remains safe and is open for traffic on I-95 South. A contractor that specializes in the type of repair needed, called heat straightening, has been hired. Workers heat the beam to a high temperature, enabling them to return it to its original shape and strength. The  repair is expected to take two or three days, which means it should wrap up over the weekend.

U.S. 421 will have lane closures while repairs are underway, so motorists are urged to slow down and use caution when approaching the work zone.  It’s possible the repairs may be completed without lane closures on I-95 South.
