Bladen County is under a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch through Tuesday, August 4, 2020. Due to weather predictions, officials have changed meeting plans and schedules.

The Bladen County Board of Commissioners’ meeting scheduled for 6:30 pm today has been canceled, according to a notice distributed by Maria C. Edwards, NCCCC, Clerk to the Board/Assistant to the County Manager. Items included on the August 3, 2020 agenda will be added to the next regular meeting scheduled for August 17, 2020.

Bladen County Schools will close at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 3, 2020. School operations will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. According to Valerie Newton, Public Relations and Information Officer with Bladen County Schools, further assessments will come Tuesday to determine the status of opening on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.

Bladen County Emergency Services Operations will open shelters at East Bladen and West Bladen high schools at 7:00 pm on Monday, August 4, according to Nathan Dowless, Bladen County Emergency Management Director. Bladen County Emergency Services Operations will manage the shelters.

Bladen Community College announced plans to closed by 5 pm Monday, August 3, and plans to open tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4, at 12 Noon. In the college’s announcement, they added, all online activities should continue as intended.

In anticipation of tropical storm conditions, Bladen County will open the following shelters today at 7:00 pm.

The shelter locations are as follows.
• East Bladen High School, 5600 NC-87 E, Elizabethtown, NC 28337
• Bladenboro Middle School, 910 S Main St, Bladenboro, NC 28320

West Bladen High school will not be used as a shelter.

Due to COVID-19, congregate sheltering may not be your best option and shelters should be used only as a last resort. Noted below are important factors to consider:

Individuals will be screened for COVID-19 prior to entry and periodically during shelter operations.

Face coverings will be required at ALL times during the stay.

Remember to pack a hurricane preparedness kit with masks, hand sanitizers, medications, and personal hygiene items.
