This morning the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Elizabethtown Police Department, White Lake Police Department, and Bladenboro Police Department to conduct simultaneous lockdowns of all Bladen County Schools.

“Our students and their safety here in Bladen County are of utmost importance,” wrote Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker in a Facebook post.

In response to recent news of the tragic shooting in Florida, an assault of a female student with a boxcutter in neighboring Robeson County, and a recent minor lock down as a result of a fight at a Bladen County School; we at the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, want to ensure as law enforcement officers and first responders we are at the ready for any event that may occur, said Sheriff McVicker.

“Today was an unannounced, unannounced test. It keeps school staff, employees and students in practice for their response in case of an emergency,” said Sheriff McVicker. “Our society is changing and we need to train each day to be ready for anything.”

Kids and staff should feel safe and secure in their schools, but knowledgeable of their response in case an event should occur. Sheriff McVicker reminds people to be vigilant and if they see or hear something they feel isn’t right, whether it be in person or on social media, please report it to the proper authorities. If you see something, say something. You never know what you report may save a life or prevent a future event from occurring.
