The search for a Fayetteville area man who has been reported as missing at Sinlgetary Lake State Park in Bladen County continued on Sunday evening. A helicopter with the NC Highway Patrol flew over the lake searching the shoreline and waters of Singletary Lake for any sign of missing Jesse Sgro on Sunday afternoon.

Kristen Woodruff, Singletary Lake State Park Superintendent, said Jesse Sgro, 22, of Fayetteville, was last seen in a canoe on the lake on Friday evening. She said park staff were notified on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. that Sgro was missing.

“Some of the group members got up earlier that morning (Saturday) and realized he had not returned. They (members of the group) had already come out to the lake and started looking around (when they notified park staff),” said Woodruff.

According to Woodruff, the canoe Sgro was in was found across the lake from the area where he was last seen and his life jacket and cell phone were found inside.

Woodruff said the search on Sunday has concentrated on the area where the canoe was found across the lake and the area where he was last seen. She said searchers have also concentrated really heavily along the lake’s shoreline as well.

Woodruff said it has been rainy and windy which has not aided in the search for Sgro. She said the search is expected to continue until dark on Sunday and, if Sgro is not located, searchers will meet again on Monday morning.

Sgro was at Singletary Lake State Park with a camp group, according to Katie Hall with the NC State Parks and Recreation.

Sgro is described as five feet six inches tall and weighs approximately 125 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white sweater with a grey chevron pattern, khaki pants, and burgundy New Balance brand shoes. Over 15 local agencies and volunteers are assisting NC State Parks in the search.

If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of Sgro, you are asked to contact the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office at 910-862-8141.
