1894 – Coca-Cola is sold in bottles for the first time in a candy store in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

1904 – Andrew Carngie establishes Carnegie Hero Fund.

1912 – Girl Scouts begin as the Girl Guides, formed by Julitte Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia.

1928 – In California, the St. Francis Dam fails, killing over 600 people.

1933 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt conducts his first “fireside chat” via radio, speaking directly to 60 million listening Americans eight days after his inauguration.

1945 – New York is first to prohibit discrimination by race and creed in employment.

1947 – President Harry Truman introduces the Truman Doctrine to fight communism.

1951 – Comic strip “Dennis the Menace,” first appears in the British comic magazine “The Beano.”

1956 – Dow Jones closes above 500 for first time (500.24)

1964 – 6th Grammy Awards: Days of Wine & Roses, Barbra Streisand wins two.

1970 – United States lowers voting from 21 to 18.

1978 – American speed skater Eric Heiden sets world record in 1000 meters in 1:14.99.

1985 – Larry Bird scores a Boston Celtics record 60 points.

1989 – 36th ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament: #9 North Carolina beats #7 Duke 77-74.

1993 – Entertainment Tonight’s 3,000th show.

1998 – “The Sound of Music” opens at Martin Beck Theater in New York City.

2008 – Streaming service Hulu launches for public access.

2019 – Dozens charged in college admission scandal by federal prosecutors, including actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman.

2020 – NCAA men’s basketball tournament is cancelled over concerns of the spread of COVID-19. It’s the first time “March Madness” was not held since it began in 1939. Women’s tournament also cancelled.

2023 – PGA Players Championship, TPC at Sawgrass: Scottie Scheffler becomes third golfer, joining Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, to hold Masters & Players titles at same time. Scheffler won by 5 strokes over England’s Tyrell Hatton.
