1899 – J.S. Truman patents motor-driven vacuum cleaners.

1913 – Federal income tax signed into law (at 1%) by President Woodrow Wilson.

1920 – American Pro Football Association (later the National Football League) plays 1st full round of games: Dayton Triangles beat Columbus Panhandles 14-0 in first official game at Triangle Park, Dayton.

1922 – 1st facsimile photo sent over city telephone lines, Washington, D.C.

1936 – New York Yankees set new attendance record of 64,482 in Game 3 of World Series at Yankee Stadium; 66,669 following day Game 4; win series against New York Giants 4-2.

1941 – Adolph Hitler says Russia is “already broken and will never rise again” in a broadcast to the German people.

1945 – Elvis Presley’s 1st public performance, at age of 10, singing “Old Shep” in youth talent contest Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo, Mississippi. Contest is broadcast over WELO Radio. He wins fifth prize – $5.00 in fair ride tickets.

1952 – 1st video recording on magnetic tape in Los Angeles, California.

1955 – “Mickey Mouse Club” premieres.

1960 – San Francisco’s White House department store is the 1st to accept BankAmericard.

1970 – Andre Previn and Alan Jay Lerner’s musical “Coco”, inspired by the life of Coco Chanel, and starring Katharine Hepburn, closes at Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City after 329 performances and 2 Tony Awards.

1974 – 39-year-old Frank Robinson becomes Major League Baseball’s first African-American manager when he signs as player-manager for Cleveland Indians. He agrees to 1-year contract estimated at $180,000.

1984 – Government shuts down due to lack of agreement over passage of bills.

1986 – Soviet Yankee-class sub sinks off North Carolina, 3 die.

1991 – 25th Country Music Association Award: Garth Brooks, Tanya Tucker & Vince Gill win.

1997 – Carolina Hurricanes lose in their 1st home game 4-3 against Pittsburgh Penguins at the Greensboro Coliseum.

2004 – TV series “Desperate Housewives” starring Teri Hatcher and an ensemble cast premieres on ABC.

2008 – The $700 billion bailout bill for the United States financial system is signed by President George W. Bush.

2017 – President Donald Trump visits Puerto Rico after it was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

2021 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady becomes NFL’s all-time leader in career passing yardage in 19-17 win against New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Brady was 22 of 43 for 269 yards to pass Drew Brees’ high of 80,358.
