I covered the Joseph Sledge hearing in Columbus County… As I listened to the folks with an interest in the judicial process, It became clear to me, all is not as it should be and as many would like it to be…but better now than then…
Thank goodness for DNA….I listened to DA Jon David and Chris Mumma, the attorney who apparently works exclusively with folks in our prison system who continue to profess their innocence…she said in some of her comments that there are several hundred in the prison system who ask for her assistance, but very few…2 or 3 annually, in her opinion that should be examined more closely. I know many profess to be innocent and are not…They have nothing to lose by asking….
But one innocent person in the system is to many…if it was me or a member of my family…and especially if there was evidence, that for whatever the reason, was not introduced at the trial….that would/could have determined guilt or innocence…I would be upset…and there are some locals who have read all the transcripts and have strong feelings…
I hope Joseph Sledge had a good nights rest…Based on the evidence presented Friday, he has earned a it….
And based on comments of DA Jon David, I hope and pray that when the case is reopened it, using all the evidence available, the guilty will become known and dealt with, whoever and wherever…The Davis family deserves to know all the facts…So far as I know, there are no “hot” prospects, despite some names “bashed around” for years…but, even after nearly 40 years, with DNA there is hope….
Again, DNA can determine guilt and innocence…
If you enjoy radio, particularly oldies and beach music as I do, we all lost a good friend this week…Buddy Edwards passed away…Buddy worked for years at WBLA, and at Columbus County radio stations including in recent years WODR… Saw him recently and he was frail…Some may not know who Buddy was, but knew his voice…He will be missed.. Check his arrangements under obits at Bladen Gaskins site.
