iOS9 Have You Updated?

By: Gordon Kinlaw, (910)862-6292

iphoneI have not updated to iOS9 and I just don’t see a lot to get excited about. Apple has released the 2nd revision to fix more bugs but I’m likely to wait for v9.1. Did you know that your phone may have already downloaded iOS9 and it’s waiting for you to install it.

If you have noticed that you are running out of space, it may be because of the 900mb file for iOS9 that is sitting on your phone. You can determine if you have it by going to Settings/ General/Usage and click on “Manage Storage” button under the “Storage” section. Wait for all of the items to populate and if 9 is there, it will be at the very top.

Select it and you will have an option to delete the file, which I did. You will get almost 1 gig of space back. While you are there, look at the space that some of your “photo” apps are using like Google Photos, Facebook and other social apps. The apps themselves may be 50mb in size but the images they pull down consume a lot of storage and account for “other” storage on your phone. “Other” is mostly photos.

On the other hand if you are ready to update to iOS9, the file will disappear after you install it. You may get a notice to “downloadstorage on iphone and install” which means the file is not on your phone yet. If you try to download the update and it says you don’t have enough room, you can handle this a few different ways.

1. Delete those social apps temporarily to get some space back and re-add them later. When you re-add the app, it will use less space for a while.

2. Hook your phone up to your PC and iTunes. Let the PC do the downloading.

3. Delete a bunch of photos and videos and empty the deleted folder.

I bought the Jongo Wifi audio adapter that I mentioned in the last article. It does work well as a way to re-use computer powered speakers. It can also be used to hook up your TV’s soundbar to Wifi. The Jongo Pure adapter will become a Wifi speaker that can be used anywhere you have Wifi access in your home.

The difference between this and bluetooth speakers means that you can leave the room with your phone and the speaker speaker for iphonecontinues to work. You can have multiple Jongo speakers or adapters in your house and they can be controlled individually. A Jongo Wifi speaks starts at $65. Sonos and Samsung Wifi speaker systems have been out a while, but they require a control box that cost $100.

Bose also announced a similar Wifi speaker to Jongo but the cost is $199 per speaker. Bose is likely to be higher quality. If you want to take your speakers to a party, you can use the bluetooth connection to connect your iPhone directly to the speaker. You will not be able to send music from every app using Jongo but the Jongo “Pure Connect” app will play your onboard music and also it’s own radio stations.

I also have to get a cable adapter to use with the PC speakers I like. The PC speakers have a single audio cable and the Jongo unit has 2 RCA audio outputs. Maybe Jongo should send a few cable adapters with the unit. If you’re shopping for Wifi speakers, give the Jongo or Bose models a try. The model for Bose is the “Sound Touch 10”.

Phone Screen Cracked? If you’re handy, you can buy a kit to repair your phone or tablet and save some money. The kit comes with parts and tools. Here’s the website. www.shop.icracked.com.
