TARBORO – Madison Ayscue’s two-run triple gave Henderson-Vance a 7-6 win over Bladen County on Sunday in the championship game of the Statewide Activities Committee 16U state championship game at Indian Lake Sports Complex.
Bladen County had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. Hailey Guyton led off with single and scored on a triple by Kadance Hammonds. MacKenzie Singletary followed with a single that scored courtesy runner Briley Stanley. That put Bladen County in a position to force an extra title game against unbeaten Henderson-Vance.
However, Ayscue’s one-out triple to center gave Henderson-Vance the championship.
Henderson-Vance had defeated Bladen County 13-1 on Saturday in the winner’s bracket title game of the four-team double elimination tournament. Bladen County beat Tarboro 6-3 on Saturday night in the semifinals to reach Sunday’s title contest. Bladen County beat Warren County 18-0 in Friday’s opening round.
Bladen County jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Sunday’s game. Lauren Pait’s single to left scored Stanley and Olivia Allen. Stanley was running for Hammonds, who had reached on an error, and Allen was running for Singletary, who had singled to right.
Henderson-Vance tied it at 2-all in the third. A two-run single by Alayna Bullock sparked a three-run fourth inning that gave Henderson-Vance a 5-2 lead.
Bladen County pulled within 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Lauren Pait reached on an error and later scored when Hannah Pait reached on an error. Madison Taylor, who walked, later stole home.
