COOPERSTOWN, NY – The Area Stars – Derrick fell behind early and could never catch up as they dropped a 9-5 decision to Gladiator Baseball from Texas in the American Youth Hall of Fame Tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park.
The loss in the single-elimination tournament was the Area Stars first loss of the tournament after 6 straight wins. Four Elizabethtown players – Ty Mathis, Elijah “Frog” Bullard, Jackson Wright and Ryan Johnson – are members of the Area Stars – Derrick team.
Mathis walloped a first inning home run for the Area Stars, but the Gladiators exploded for 6 runs in the first to take a 6-1 lead. Johnson belted a single in the third inning, but the Gladiators held on to the 6-1 margin.
Mathis walked and Bullard ripped a single in the fourth inning as the Area Stars scored twice to stay within 8-3. Johnson blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Area Stars to within 9-5, but the Gladiators held on to advance to the tourney’s final 16 teams.
