LELAND –North Brunswick grabbed the lead with a pair of early unearned runs and held on for a 4-3 non-conference baseball victory over West Bladen Wednesday night.

West Bladen, now 2-5, will host Lumberton Thursday night at 6:30. North Brunswick, now 5-2, will travel to New Hanover Thursday night.

The Knights loaded the bases on walks to junior Garrett Dunham, freshman Ashton Davis and senior Jordan Hester in the 1st inning. Junior Allister Russ fielder’s choice scored Dunham for a 1-0 West lead.

In the North 1st inning, senior Cody Callahan singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Aydean White reached base on an error. Sophomore Dylan Stacks drove in White with a double that put North up 2-1.

The Scorpions tacked on a run in the 4th inning. Senior Garrett Gore and sophomore Jonah Campbell belted singles and advanced on a passed ball. Sophomore Ryan Grisso’s fielder’s choice scored Gore for a 3-1 lead.

Dunham raked a single to the left side and scored when junior Cade Allen ripped a double to left that trimmed the North lead to 3-2 in the 5th inning.

Gore reached on an error, stole 2nd base and scored an insurance run on Grisso’s single in the 6th inning to pad the lead to 4-2.

Dunham walked, stole a base then dashed home on Allen’s single in the 7th inning that whittled the final margin to 4-3. A pair of fly-outs ended the game.

Allen batted 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs batted in to lead the Knight hitters. Dunham, senior Jahmar Richardson and junior Aiden Russ smacked 1 hit each for West. Allister Russ drove in a run, and Dunham scored all 3 Knight runs.

Allister Russ started on the hill for the Knights and pitched 2.2 innings allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits while striking out 1. Davis worked 1.1 innings of relief and gave up an unearned run on 2 hits. Aiden Russ pitched the final 2 innings and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and a walk.

Sophomore Fisher Goodwin batted 2-for-3 with a double to lead the North hitters. Stacks laced an RBI double. Grisso singled and had 2 RBIs. Gore singled and scored 2 runs.

Four different pitchers worked on the hill for North with junior Jordan Stegall picking up the win with 2.2 innings of work allowing a run on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.
