ELIZABETHTOWN – Ellen Battle and Mariah Ward combined for 11 points Tuesday night as Elizabethtown rallied for a 16-12 victory over Clarkton School of Discovery in the opening round of the Bladen County Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday at Samuel C. Boger Gymnasium.

Tyleah Freeman nailed a 3-point shot and a free throw as the Lady Blue Devils built a 4-0 1st quarter lead. The Lady Cougars fought back as Mariah Ward threw in 2 baskets, and Sana’a Singletary popped in another bucket for a 6-4 Elizabethtown halftime lead.

Battle took charge in the 3rd period firing in 3 baskets. Singletary and Aaliyah Monroe sank free throws as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 14-8. Freeman kept Clarkton close with a pair of baskets.

Nevaeh Brown and Ellie Kinlaw rallied the Lady Blue Devils with baskets in the final quarter, but Monroe and Singletary dropped in free throws to keep Elizabethtown on top.

Battle led the Lady Cougar scoring with 6 points, Ward finished with 5 points, and Singletary added 3. Freeman claimed game scoring honors with 8 points for Clarkton.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars, now 2-0, advance to Thursday’s tournament championship game against Bladenboro. Clarkton, now 1-1, will visit Tabor City January 26th in Waccamaw Conference play.
