BasketballJatyra Moore-Peterson lit up the scoreboard with 18 points Monday night to lead Elizabethtown to a 27-16 victory over Tar Heel in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Tournament at Tar Heel.

Coach Eric Hines’ Lady Cougars improved to 6-1 with the victory and advanced to Monday’s 4 p.m. Girls Championship Game against Clarkton School of Discovery.

Moore –Peterson fired in 6 points in the opening quarter as the Lady Cougars held the Lady Panthers scoreless and grabbed an 8-0 lead. Natalie Gainey scored the other basket for Elizabethtown in the period.

Moore-Peterson sank 2 free throws in the second quarter and dropped in another basket to keep Elizabethtown on top 12-5 at halftime.

Conner Brisson who poured in 14 points to lead the Tar Heel scoring bombed in a 3-point shot in the quarter, and teammate Claudia Reyes added a basket.

Moore-Peterson rang up 6 more points in the third period as the Lady Cougars stretched their lead to 22-12 at the third quarter break. Teammates Mya Williams and Patience Ward tossed in baskets in the period for Elizabethtown.

Brisson nailed a 3-point shot and threw in two more baskets to score all 7 of Tar Heel’s points in the quarter.

Zy’Asia Monroe and Moore-Peterson scored the final Elizabethtown baskets, and Ward added a free throw. Brisson connected for two more baskets in the final quarter for Tar Heel.
