Back came the Eagles as Smith and Avery pumped in 3-point shots. Page hit 2 free throws, but Eian Hines and Avery both scored inside baskets to slice the West lead to 40-37.

Dent drained a 3-pointer, and John Bowen scored a lay-up. Eian Hines drilled a 3-pointer, and brother Ethan Hines converted a lay-up off of an in-bounds pass. Demetrius Wooten hit a free throw to cut the West lead to 45-43.

Dent swished a 17-footer, but senior Denzel Johnson fired in a 3-point shot to trim the margin to 47-46 at the quarter break.

“We didn’t listen and do what we had been told to do to stop that play,” said Knight Coach Travis Pait. “We had our chances to win, but didn’t get it done on the floor. East Bladen played well.”

“I wish we had this group together all year,” said Coach McCall whose team has had Sincere Smith and Ethan Hines return recently from injuries. “We said we were going to try and get it together by the conference tournament.”

“Adonis hit some big shots,” said McCall. “Having Ethan back gives us another athlete. Skippy (Smith) played hard. We didn’t quit.”

After Tuesday’s win over second-seeded Wallace-Rose Hill, Coach McCall said that he had received a number of texts comparing the Eagles’ situation to N. C. State’s 1983 “Cardiac Pack” who had to win their conference tournament to advance to the national tournament. A win over Clinton Friday would put the Eagles in the state play-offs.

West Bladen, now 17-9, will wait for Saturday when the NCHSAA pairings will be announced. The Knights are expected to receive a first-round home game.
