CERRO GORDO – A 20-9 3rd quarter run pulled West Bladen to within a point, but West Columbus made just enough free throws to escape with a 68-64 Three Rivers Conference boys’ basketball victory over the Knights Tuesday night.

 

The Vikings built a 41-29 halftime lead, but Donovan Stone nailed a 3-point shot and another basket to spark the Knight rally. Javonte Matthews and freshman Landon Stanley threw in 2 baskets each. Anthony Mitchell drained a 3-point shot, and Josiah Brown and Josh Lewis pumped in baskets to pull the Knights within 50-49.

 

UNCP commit Brandis Kelly dropped in a basket and 2 free throws, and Amajae Lowery pumped in a 3-ball and 2 free throws to keep the Vikings ahead. Keywone Sumpter and Unique Kelly hit 2 free throws each in the final period.

 

Lewis nailed a 3-point shot and 2 other baskets for the Knights in the 4th quarter. Teammate Keshaun Ballard buried a 3-point shot, and Matthews and senior ShyRon Adams popped in baskets. Mitchell added a free throw.

 

Lewis led the Knights with 14 points, and Stone finished with 11 points. Adams scored 9 points, and Ballard and Matthews followed with 8 points each. Mitchell tallied 6 points.

 

Kelly topped all scorers with 17 points for the Vikings. Sumpter totaled 14 points, Lowery followed with 13 points, and Darrius Marshall and Ethan Brown netted 10 points each.

 

Stone drilled in a pair of 3-point shots in the opening quarter, and Lewis and Matthews bombed in one 3-ball each. Ballard, Matthews and sophomore Deonte Lacey sank 2 free throws each to keep the Knights within 19-18 at the quarter break.

 

Brandis Kelly powered in 4 baskets in the 1st period. Marshall threw in a 3-ball, 2 baskets and a free throw in the 2nd quarter, and Lowery flipped in 3 baskets during a 22-11 Viking run.

 

Ballard and Adams rallied the Knights with 3-point baskets in the 2nd period, Mitchell popped in a basket, Lewis cashed in 2 free throws and Adams hit one.

 

West Bladen will host St. Pauls Friday night.
