SNOW HILL – Elizabethtown native Cade Hancock sank the key birdie putt in an historic playoff as his Mount Olive Trojans won the 2020-2021 Conference Carolinas Men’s Golf Championship Tuesday.

It was the first conference championship for the Trojans in school history. However Mount Olive tied with North Greenville with identical teams scores of 857 at the end of regulation play.

No playoff had been needed to decide the league title in over 20 years of competition. Each team provided 5 golfers for the playoff hole and the best 4 scores from each team counted. The golfers were divided into 2 groups.

Hancock, who was playing in the first group, sank a birdie putt on the playoff hole to put the Trojans ahead. When the second group came in, North Greenville had no one under par, and Mount Olive’s Patrick Schweitz parred the hole to clinch the championship.

Hancock fired rounds of 72, 73 and 72 to tie for 11th place in regulation play. The sophomore’s 217 total was matched by teammate Brice Ballin. Mount Olive was led by Olle Ryberg who tied for 7th with a 213 total. Schweitz and Ruben van der Berg carded 219 totals to tie for 15th place.

The Conference Carolinas championship qualifies Mount Olive for the NCAA Southeast Regional. The selection show for men’s golf is April 23rd on NCAA.com.
