WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09), Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance, today urged Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to explore new sanctions against Qatar-based terrorism financiers.
Congressman Pittenger’s letter to Secretary Mnuchin was co-signed by Congressmen Robert Aderholt (AL-04), David Trott (MI-11), and French Hill (AR-02).
“As you know, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain placed strong sanctions on close to 90 entities in Qatar for their roles in providing material support to fund terror. Of the sanctioned parties, the UAE determined that over 40 individuals and organizations financed, aided, or provided other material support to Al-Qaeda and its associated networks. The U.S. and United Nations have sanctioned some, but not all, of the parties identified by these Middle East countries,” writes Congressman Pittenger and his colleagues.
“As a global leader in combatting terror finance, we must support international efforts to punish those who provide the financial means by which to conduct violent terror attacks. With that in mind, we respectfully request that you conduct a timely review of the list of entities sanctioned by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and UAE to determine if the U.S. can similarly designate any of the other persons and entities as terrorist financiers who have not yet already been sanctioned by the U.S. government,” the letter continues.
