The Tar Heels breathed life into their under performing season Saturday with a 71-63 win against No. 6 Virginia. A key quadrant 1 win in UNC’s drive to make the NCAA tournament and avoid being the first preseason No. 1 team not to make the tournament field since it expanded to 64 teams in 1985. No rest for the weary, though. North Carolina plays at Florida State on Monday night.

N.C. State and Duke appear solidly in the NCAA tournament field. North Carolina and Wake Forest seem to need a couple more wins.

Watched the Atlanta Braves’ pitch-clock 6-6 tie against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in the spring training opener. Atlanta’s Cal Conley was called out on strikes for not being ready in time with the bases loaded, two outs and a full count. The Braves had rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. To say it was an odd ending is an understatement.

I did like the pace of the game, which is the idea behind the pitch clock, although it did seem play was rushed at times. It’s a work in progress, but I like the concept. Hopefully, players and umpires will have adjusted by the time the regular season starts.

I plan to further “study” the new MLB rules by watching more spring games. Somebody has to do it.
