Basketball season ended Thursday for Bladen County high school and middle school teams, but local sports fans need not despair. The spring sports season begins Monday. Well, scheduled to begin Monday. The weather rules during spring sports season.

The weather forecast from the National Weather Service looks perfect for Monday and Tuesday. It’s a bit iffy later in the week, but we’ll take it for this time of the year.

Weather-related concerns aside, the West Bladen varsity and junior varsity baseball teams are scheduled to play at Gray’s Creek on Monday and the East Bladen and West Bladen boys’ golf teams are set to play at Sandy Ridge Golf Course in Dunn.

Middle school baseball and softball teams are set to open March 13-14.

Congratulations to the Bladenboro boys’ basketball team that repeated as the Waccamaw Division A championship with a second consecutive unbeaten season.

Kudos to the Clarkton School of Discovery girls’ basketball team that won the Waccamaw Division A championship and to the Elizabethtown girls’ basketball team for sharing the Waccamaw Division B title with Whiteville.

Southeastern Athletic Conference girls’ basketball teams St. Pauls and Fairmont will play in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs Saturday. No. 4 seed St. Pauls (20-5) hosts No. 5 Pittsboro Seaforth (24-3). No. 11 Fairmont (25-4) plays at No. 3 Elizabeth City Northeastern (26-1).
