CLARKTON – Jayden Bethea and Brooks Carroll combined to pitch a 3-hit shutout and strike-out 8 batters as Bladen County defeated South Columbus 4-0 Saturday in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Tournament.

Bladen County will play Whiteville Sunday at 2:30 in a winners’ bracket game. Whiteville received an opening round bye.

Bethea started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and a walk while striking out 4. Carroll worked the final 2.2 innings on the hill and allowed a hit and 2 walks while striking out 4.

Drake Gause walked in the Bladen 1st inning, stole a base and scored on an error.

Bladen tacked on 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. Bethea and Peyton Johnson drew walks, and Gaston Russ knocked in Bethea with a single to right field. An error on Sawyer King’s grounder to shortstop scored Johnson and Gaston Russ as the lead grew to 4-0.

Gaston Russ and Gauge King belted singles for Bladen County. Russ, Gause, Bethea and Johnson scored runs, and Gaston Russ drove in a run.

Walker Smith walloped a 2-out 1st inning triple for South Columbus, but Bethea struck out the next batter to end the threat.
