West Bladen High School LogoWest Bladen’s almost 600-mile, 17-hour round trip Saturday to Currituck County High in Barco for their opening round NCHSAA Class 2-A Girls Basketball Play-off game finally ended around 2:00 Sunday morning.

Leaving West Bladen Saturday morning, the Lady Knights finally arrived in Barco around 3:30 after 6.5 hours on the road. Then the West girls had to get ready for a 5 p.m. tap-off.

The game didn’t start well for West as the local officials whistled 25 fouls on the visitors compared to only 8 being called on the home team. On the bright side Currituck wasn’t very efficient at the foul line and only converted 16 of 36 free throw attempts. West Bladen only had 8 free throw attempts.

Senior Delasia Richardson just missed a double-double for the Lady Knights scoring a team-high 8 points and grabbing a whopping 15 rebounds.

Senior guard Miriam Mendoza added 5 points, and sophmore Jenna Dove tallied 4 points. Senior Breanna Jackson pulled down 9 rebounds for West. “The girls played hard,” said West Bladen Coach Pam Stephens. “I was proud of their effort.”

Around 7 p.m. West Bladen loaded the bus for the long ride home. “Joe (JV Coach Joe Lewis) was a life-saver,” said Coach Stephens. “If I hadn’t had him to help with the driving, I would have never made it.”
