East Bladen High SchoolDUBLIN – East Bladen defeated West Bladen 3-2 Monday night in Four County Conference men’s soccer action.

Junior Brooks McGill drilled in the first Eagle goal on an indirect free kick from 7 yards out. Freshman Jake Evans tacked on the second East Bladen goal moments later.

Junior Emerson Escobar fired in a free kick for the first West Bladen goal that trimmed the margin to 2-1.

Sophmore Greyson Heustess knocked in the third East Bladen goal with just under ten minutes left in the game. After the kick-off West Bladen answered and trimmed the lead back to 3-2.

It was a hard-fought game,” said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. “They had a game plan to limit our looks and it worked. We didn’t play our best soccer and they dominated the midfield. We kept turning the ball over and played right into their hands.”

Sophmore goalkeeper Spencer Scott was credited with 8 saves for the Eagles. “If Spencer hadn’t made some amazing saves, we lose easily,” continued Raynor. “He had a fantastic night.”

McGill, Evans, sophmore Pierce Melvin and senior Grey Cabellero were credited with one assist each for East Bladen.

Freshman Gabe Barber led the Eagle defense with 9 steals. Heustess and Cabellero were right behind with 8 steals each. Sophmore Ezequiel Arteaga finished with 7 steals and was followed by Melvin and McGill with 6 each, and junior Caleb Hatchell and sophmore Keshaun Davis with 5 steals each.

“West dominated the second half and the last few minutes,” said Coach Raynor. “They are a strong team and they wanted it more than we did. At times we looked dangerous up top, but we lacked consistency and kept losing the midfield. The backline picked its play up and kept us in the game.”

East Bladen improves to 5-2 in league play and 9-3-1 overall. The Eagles will go to Midway Wednesday night. The Knights are now 5-5-1 and will travel to Union Wednesday night.
