ELIZABETHTOWN – Fox Sutton pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 11 batters to lead Elizabethtown to an 8-3 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Tabor City Wednesday.
Coach Teffrey McKoy’s Cougars posted their 1st win of the season and improved to 1-3. The Cougars will travel to West Columbus Tuesday. Tabor City is now 0-4.
Sutton didn’t walk a batter and only 1 of the Tabor City runs was earned.
Trey Wilson walked to begin the Cougar 1st inning, and Jayden Byrd reached base on an error. Chandler Wall sliced a double down the leftfield line that scored Wilson, and Wall scored on Sutton’s fielder’s choice to put Elizabethtown on top 2-0.
Wilson walked in the 2nd inning, and Byrd and Wall smacked singles that scored Wilson and padded the lead to 3-0.
Gentry Thompson walloped an inside-the-park home run to left-centerfield for Tabor City to narrow the lead to 3-1 in the 4th inning.
Khalil Moore was hit by a pitch to start the Cougar 4th inning. Wilson forced Moore at 2nd base, then stole 2nd base. Byrd belted a single, and Wall reached on an error that scored Wilson and Byrd and pushed the lead to 5-1.
Tabor City capitalized on a pair of errors to trim the margin to 5-3 in the 5th inning. Damian Maynor reached base on an error to start the Cougar half of the 5th. Moore walked, and Byrd drove in Maynor with a single. Wall’s fielder’s choice plated Moore and stretched the lead to 7-3.
Isaiah Lloyd walked to begin the Cougar 6th inning. Lloyd stole 2 bases and dashed home on Chase Moultrie’s single to boost the lead to 8-3.
Byrd batted 3-for-4 with 2 runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Cougar hitters. Wall finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, 3 RBIs and a run scored. Maynor doubled and scored a run. Lloyd and Moultrie cracked 1 single each. Wilson scored 3 runs, and Lloyd and Moore scored 1 run each. Sutton and Moultrie had RBIs.
