TAR HEEL – Nathan Demery and Jaden Lewis combined for 20 points Thursday night to lead Elizabethtown to a 40-18 Waccamaw Middle School Conference ‘AA’ Division boys’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.
Demery led all scorers with 12 points, and Lewis followed with 8 points. Center Tykee Hill added 5 points, and Damian Maynor and John Monroe collected 4 points each. Shyron Thompson banged in 6 points to lead the Panthers, and teammates Osvaldo Fures and Sterling Davis netted 4 points each.
Demery drained a 3-point shot and sank 4 free throws in the 1st quarter for the Cougars. Hill canned 2 free throws, and Monroe flipped in a basket as the visitors raced to an 11-2 lead. Fures’ powered in a basket for Tar Heel.
Thompson and Fures worked the paint for Panther baskets in the 2nd period. Hill and Monroe tossed in baskets for Elizabethtown, and Lewis cashed in 2 free throws to push the Cougar lead to 17-6 at halftime.
Lewis fired in 3 baskets for Elizabethtown in the 3rd quarter, Hill hit a foul shot, and Demery bombed in a 3-ball and another basket as the margin grew to 29-10. Thompson muscled in 2 baskets for Tar Heel in the period.
Maynor threw in 2 baskets in the final period for the Cougars. Sheldon Melvin and DeVance Tatum hurled in baskets, and Fox Sutton buried a 3-point shot. Davis worked the paint for a basket and 2 free throws for Tar Heel, and teammates Dylan McLaurin and Ronnie Labra popped in baskets.
Coach Darius Gillespie’s Cougars improved to 1-2 in the Waccamaw ‘AA’ Division and 2-4 overall. Elizabethtown will host West Columbus Tuesday. Tar Heel, now 0-2 in league play and 0-4 overall, will travel to East Columbus Tuesday.
