TAR HEEL – A 21-2 third quarter spurt carried Elizabethtown to a 45-20 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over Tar Heel.

Guard JaQuez McKoy pumped in a pair of first quarter baskets, Drew Sholar nailed a 3-point shot and Lefrederick Wooten tossed in a basket as the Cougars jumped out to a 9-0 first quarter lead.

The Panthers rallied with a 7-1 second quarter run to close the gap to 10-7 at halftime. Khalil Lloyd buried a 3-point shot and a 2-point shot to lead the Tar Heel come-back, and center Kai Belle powered in a basket. Darius Autry sank a free throw for the Cougars in the period.

Center Javant McDowell worked the paint for 2 baskets and a free throw to spark the Cougar third-quarter blitz. JaQuez McKoy drilled a 3-point shot and made 2 free throws.

Ra’Sean McKoy battled inside for 2 more baskets, and Layne Ross tacked on a basket and a free throw. Sholar connected for another basket, and Wooten hit 2 free throws as the Cougar lead ballooned to 31-9. Belle muscled inside for the Tar Heel basket in the period.

McDowell dropped in a trio of baskets in the fourth period, and teammate Ryan Yandle threw in 2 baskets. Ahmad Powell and Marvin McKiver scored a basket each for the Cougars in the quarter.

Lloyd lit up the scoreboard with 4 final-period baskets and topped all scorers with 13 points for Tar Heel. Belle flipped in another basket and finished with 6 points. Cory Clanton hit a free throw for the other Panther point.

McDowell totaled 11 points to lead the Cougar scoring, and JaQuez McKoy finished with 9 points. Sholar followed with 5 points, and Wooten, Ra’Sean McKoy and Yandle scored 4 points each.

The Cougars improved to 3-0 and will host unbeaten Clarkton School of Discovery Thursday.
