TAR HEEL – Tavion Smith fired in 11 of his game-high 18 points during a 19-6 closing rally that propelled Tar Heel to a 37-28 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over East Columbus Monday night.

The visiting Hawks built a 19-10 halftime lead, but Josiah Belle-Robinson bombed in a pair of 3-point shots for the Panthers in the 3rd period, and a Tavion Smith basket pulled Tar Heel to within 22-18 at the quarter break.

Tavion Smith poured in a 3-point shot, 6 free throws and another basket to spark Tar Heel’s winning rally in the 4th quarter. Dguan Smith sank 2 foul shots and another basket, and Belle-Robinson and Dylan Hernandez netted baskets as the Panthers won going away.

Belle-Robinson followed Tavion Smith with 11 points for the winners, and Dguan Smith tallied 6 points. Braylon Waddell drilled in a trio of 3-point shots, and scored 14 of his 17 points for East Columbus before halftime.

Tavion Smith buried a 3-point shot and 2 free throws for Tar Heel in the 1st half. Belle-Robinson tossed in a basket and a free throw, and Dguan Smith threw in a basket.

It was the first win of the season for Coach Brett Jackson’s Panthers, now 1-2, who will host West Columbus Tuesday at 4 p.m.
