BLADENBORO — A 20-0 3rd quarter blitz broke open a 15-7 game and propelled Tar Heel to a 42-10 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over Tabor City Thursday night.
Coach Ken Cross’ Panthers improved to 3-0 in the Waccamaw’s ‘A’ Division and 7-1 overall. Tar Heel can clinch the ‘A’ Division championship with a win over Williams Township Monday. Tabor City, now 2-2 and 3-7 overall, will visit West Columbus Tuesday night.
Carnell Lewis buried a 3-point shot and a free throw, and Levi Velasco-Garcia and Cedrick McKiver added baskets as the Panthers raced to an early 9-5 lead. Teammate Demarious Guions tacked on a free throw. Noah Buffkin threw in a 3-pointer, and Gentry Thompson netted a basket for the Eagles.
Guions and McKiver pumped in Tar Heel baskets in the 2nd quarter, and Lewis cashed in 2 free throws to up the count to 15-7.
Velasco-Garcia fired in 2 baskets and a free throw, and Guions sank 3 free throws and a basket to key the 20-0 Panther blitz after halftime. McKiver nailed a 3-pointer and a free throw, and Daveon Whittington, Lewis and Jahari Walker flipped in a basket each to widen the gap to 35-7.
Walker tossed in 2 more baskets in the final period, and Gregory O’Neal popped in a basket and a free throw for the Panthers.
Lewis, McKiver and Guions headed the balanced Tar Heel attack with 8 points each. Velasco-Garcia was right behind them with 7 points, and Walker tallied 6 points. Buffkin and Christopher Long scored 3 points each for the Eagles.
