CLARKTON – Javant McDowell scored two touchdowns, and Elizabethtown’s defense recorded their second straight shutout with a 30-0 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory Monday night over Clarkton School of Discovery.

Cougar quarterback Zach Meares threw a 50-yard pass to McDowell for a first-quarter touchdown. The extra point kick was blocked and Elizabethtown led 6-0.

Darius Autry capped the next Elizabethtown scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Meares kept the ball and carried into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 second-quarter lead.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, McDowell broke loose and dashed 60 yards for a Cougar touchdown. Autry darted into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and a 22-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Lefrederick Wooten bolted 45 yards for the final Elizabethtown touchdown. Meares ran the 2-point conversion for the final points of the game.

“Clarkton played us tough in the first half,” said Cougar Coach Rick Whitaker. “I thought we kind of overwhelmed them in the second half. We had 3 touchdowns called back.”

“The defense did a great job with another shutout,” continued Coach Whitaker. “All but two of the guys on defense are seventh-graders, and I am tickled to death with the way they are playing.”

Elizabethtown remains unbeaten at 2-0 and will travel to Tar Heel Thursday night. Clarkton School of Discovery, now 1-1, will visit Bladenboro.
