UnemploymentRALEIGH — The state’s seasonally adjusted August unemployment rate was 5.9 percent, remaining unchanged from July’s revised rate.  The national rate declined 0.2 of a percentage point to 5.1 percent.

North Carolina’s August 2015 unemployment rate was 0.1 of a percentage point lower than a year ago.  The number of people employed decreased by 8,844 over the month to 4,473,083, and increased 121,361 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 2,040 over the month to 281,268, and increased 5,607 over the year.

Seasonally adjusted Total Non-farm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 700 to 4,258,600 in August. The major industry with the largest over-the-month increase was Construction at 2,700, followed by Leisure & Hospitality Services, 2,200; Manufacturing, 1,600; Financial Activities, 1,300; Professional & Business Services, 800; and Information, 500. Major industries experiencing decreases were Government, 3,600; Education & Health Services, 2,900; Other Services, 1,300; and Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 600. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the month.

Since August 2014, Total Non-farm jobs gained 107,200 with the Total Private sector growing by 112,000 and Government decreasing by 4,800.  The largest over-the-year increase among major industries was Professional & Business Services at 22,100, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 18,700; Leisure & Hospitality Services, 17,500; Construction, 13,200; Manufacturing, 12,700; Education & Health Services, 11,400; Other Services, 7,300; Financial Activities, 6,500; and Information, 2,600.  The only major industry experiencing a decrease over the year was Government, 4,800.  Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the year.

The next unemployment update is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2015 when the county unemployment rates for August 2015 will be released.
