35 years ago, on Saturday, June 27th, 1986, a Bladen County Youth Baseball team won the opening game of a youth baseball tournament against Whiteville with a final score of 11-8. In the same game, the youth teams for Elizabethtown and Chadbourn played each other with Elizabethtown blowing Chadbourn away with a 21-6 score.

According to the Southeastern Time article that was written on the event, the Bladen-Whiteville game opened with Bladen county scoring three runs at the top of the game’s first inning. Then, Robert Moore singled with two outs. Clint Shaw, another player on the Bladen county team, reached with a fielder’s choice. Robert Moore then scored on a single by Stan Davis. Davis and Shaw scored on a double by Jamar Moore. Whiteville was able to come back with four runs in the bottom of the game’s first inning to take the lead, 4-3.

The game continued to be a back and forth with a 6-4 score with three runs at the top of the second inning. McRae Lewis reached on an error and Robert Moore walked. Lewis then scored on a wild pitch and Moore scored on a single by Clint Shaw. Shaw then stole second, scoring on a two-out single by Jamar Moore. Bladen County came back with three runs in the top of the fourth to lead with 9-8. Lewis then went to open the inning with a single and stole second. Jamar Moore then rapped his fourth hit of the night with a double to center field and scored on a single by Derrick Russ. That night, Shaw was credited for the team’s victory, with the two Bladen county pitchers allowed five hits, walked seven, and struck out seven. Steven Worthington was charged with the loss, allowing 15 hits, three walks, and struck six out.
