NEW BERN – Onslow County shutout Bladen County 4-0 Saturday in the opening round of the Statewide Activities Committee (SWAC) Sectional Tournament.
The game was a pitching duel, between the hard-throwing Onslow pitcher and Bladen’s Rylee Chadwick. Chadwick pitched a 2-hitter, struck out 9 and walked four. The Onslow hurler pitched a one-hitter, struck out 8 and walked two.
“Pitching dominated the game,” said Bladen Coach Chuck Heustess. “Their pitcher throws it 54-55 mph, but we put it in play a lot. I was proud she only struck out eight..”
Onslow capitalized on 2 walks to push across a first inning run then scored one in the third and 2 more in the fifth on a hit, an error and a walk.
AnnaGrey Heustess connected for the only Bladen County hit. Alexis Mitchell and Emma Turbeville drew walks for the only other Bladen baserunners.
