1887 – North Carolina State University is founded by the North Carolina General Assembly.

1908 – Cincinnati Mayor Mark Breith stands before city council and announces that, “women are not physically fit to operate automobiles.”

1911 – United States sends 20,000 troops to Mexican border.

1918 – President Woodrow Wilson authorizes US Army’s Distinguished Service Award.

1935 – Malcolm Campbell sets world land speed record 276.21 mph driving his famous BlueBird car. It was the last record set at Daytona Beach, Florida.

1941 – Third largest snowfall then in New York City history of 18.1 inches.

1945 – US 9th Armored Division attacks Remagen, Germany, crosses Rhine.

1951 – Ezzard Charles beats Jersey Joe Walcott in 15 rounds for the second time to win the National Boxing Association world heavyweight title at the Olympia in Detroit, Michigan.

1959 – Sixth ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament: NC State beats North Carolina 80-56.

1967 – Clark Gesner’s musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” based on characters from Charles M. Schulz’s’ “Peanuts” comic strip, and starring Gary Burghoff, opens at Theatre 80 in the East Village, New York City. It runs for 1,597 performances.

1974 – “USS Monitor”, a Union Ship sunk in 1862 during the Civil War, is restored at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

1981 – 28th ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament: North Carolina beats Maryland 61-60.

1986 – Wayne Gretzky breaks own National Hockey League season record with 136th assist.

1994 – US Navy issues first permanent order assigning women on combat ships.

1999 – 46th ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament: #1 Duke beats #15 North Carolina 96-73.

2011 – Charlie Sheen is fired from the CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”

2016 – Peyton Manning announces his retirement from the Denver Broncos and the National Football League.

2019 – Chinese telecommunications company Huawei sues the US government over a federal ban on its products.

2023 – China and America are heading toward inevitable “confrontation and conflict” unless America changes course, warns Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang.
