I received an email from a long time friend now living in the Wilmington area…Dan McLaurin….I know Dan as an athlete at White Oak High School, an educator….teacher, coach, principal and now a retiree.

Dan shared plans for a ‘big’ event Saturday in White Oak….and I share with you. It is an annual White Oak Reunion, this year in the old gym. Attendees consist of graduates and anyone who ever attended, taught or worked there. As of Monday, August 3, over 200 are expected to attend. Registration begins at 2 p.m., with a meal served at four. The festivities are expected to end around 8 p.m. Normally, according to McLaurin, there would be no speeches, but there will be a time for sharing of memories.

The property was donated to White Oak Baptist Church several years ago and they “embarked on a massive undertaking to restore and remodel the facility.” Again quoting McLaurin, “what has been accomplished is amazing.” The Saturday function will be the first time the function has been held at the old gym since the school closed in the 1976-77 school year. Received a note from Sabrina Sasser, Dublin teacher complete with a pic of students and computers… Ms. Sasser asks for assistance in raising money to match a grant that would provide computers for her classroom… Thanks for allowing BladenOnline to be a small part of the project….

The annual meeting of the Bladen County Committee of 100 is set for Thursday at the Powell-Melvin Ag Center in Elizabethtown. The cost is $100…includes a meal, a good program and supports EDC efforts in the county.
