SHALLOTTE — Cherryville snapped a 3-3 tie with 4 runs in the 4th inning then rode the pitching of senior Laila Davis to a 9-3 victory over East Bladen Tuesday in the 2nd round of the Touchstone Beach Diamond Softball Invitational Tournament at West Brunswick High School.

The Lady Eagles, now 3-6, will play Scotland (8-0) Wednesday at 4 p.m. Cherryville improved to 10-1 and will battle South Columbus at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A walk, an error and Krista Davis’ sacrifice fly plated the go ahead run in the Lady Ironmen 4th inning. Four consecutive singles by Emma Proctor, Alexis McSwain, Laila Davis and Ava Miller produced 3 more runs and opened up a 7-3 lead.

An error, McSwain’s single, Laila Davis’ double and a fielder’s choice plated 2 more runs in the 6th inning and padded the final count to 9-3.

Laila Davis relieved starting pitcher Raylei Gidney in the 5th inning and worked 3 scoreless innings allowing only a single and a walk while striking out 4. Gidney pitched 4 innings and gave up 3 unearned runs on 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3.

Consecutive singles by Landyn McBride, Krista Davis and Proctor plus McSwain’s sacrifice fly resulted in a Cherryville run in the 1st inning. A walk, an error and sacrifice flies by McSwain and Laila Davis stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 3rd inning.

Freshman Jamiee Perkins reached base on an error, and freshman Taylor Dowless walked to start the East Bladen 4th inning. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, before sophomore Cabria Baldwin lined a single to center field that scored Perkins. Freshman Nadya Colon’s fielder’s choice plated Dowless, and an error on the play scored Baldwin to tie the game 3-3.

Perkins batted 2-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Lady Eagle hitters. Baldwin and junior Mollie Tolar cracked singles, and Baldwin and Colon drove in 1 run each. Dowless and Baldwin scored 1 run each.

Sophomore Jenna Brice pitched a complete game and allowed 9 runs – 1 earned – on 11 hits, 4 walks and 4 errors while striking out 3.

McSwain batted 2-for-2 with 3 runs batted in to lead the Cherryville hitters. Laila Davis finished 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Proctor was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored. McBride was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, and Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
