West Bladen High School LogoWest Bladen’s Knights scrimmaged Red Springs and Raleigh’s Word of God Christian Academy Thursday evening in the Robeson County Football Jamboree at Red Springs.

Sophomore B. J. Drake’s 20-yard run set up senior Da’quan Lennon’s one-yard touchdown run on the Knights first possession.

On West Bladen’s second possession, senior Malique McDowell dashed 35 yards to the five yardline, then bulled through the line on the next play to score standing up.

The Knights threatened again but James Moore’s 5-yard touchdown run was nullified by a penalty.

Lennon galloped 25 yards around the end to set up McDowell’s 3-yard touchdown run for the final West Bladen touchdown.  McDowell rushed 8 times for 93 yards to lead the Knights against Red Springs.

The Red Devils threw four touchdown passes in the scrimmage and scored twice on runs.

The Knight defense stymied Word of God on their first ten plays holding the Holy Rams to only one net yard.

On West Bladen’s first play from scrimmage, Lennon sprinted around left end and sprinted 65 yards for a touchdown. The Knights drove 60 yards to the Word of God five yard line on their next possession, but were stopped by the ten-play limit.

The Holy Rams scored on a short touchdown pass on their next possession.  West Bladen answered as Drake picked up ten yards, and McDowell broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run. McDowell carried 3 times for 85 yards against Word of God.

“The backs ran hard, but I am most pleased with the offensive line,” said Knight Coach Russell Dove. “The offense was so much better tonight than last night, and it was because the offensive line got off the ball really well.”

“Defensively, we had a lot of missed assignments,” said Coach Dove. “But in the last two days, we’ve seen the triple option, a shotgun spread and a pistol power offense.”

“I am pleased with where we are at,” continued Dove. “Red Springs is a pretty good team. We have got some things to correct, but we will get back to work, get some reps and get them fixed. We are on the right path.”

The Knights open the regular season next Friday at home against South Robeson.
