BasketballThe number five seed Wingate University women’s basketball team (21-9) overall will face number four seed Lander University (23-6 overall) in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament in Gaffney, S.C. Friday (March 13) at a time to be announced, according to the Wingate website. The three-day event will be hosted by number one Limestone.  The Bulldogs earned an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA Division II play-offs.
“I’m thrilled for this group of seniors to get the opportunity to extend their season,” Wingate head women’s basketball coach Ann Hancock says.  “They have worked extremely hard and played well all year.  We look forward to the challenge of post-season play in a tough region.  This has been our goal from the beginning.  It’s a new season.  March is the most fun time of the year for basketball.  We are glad to be a part of it.”
First-round games will be played on Friday, March 13, with the semi-finals on Saturday, March 14 and the championship game on Monday, March 16.  The South Atlantic Conference and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference send five teams each to this year’s dance.   Visit the NCAA web site at www.ncaa.com/ for details.
Hancock is a graduate of East Bladen High School and Wingate University and has coached at UNC, UNCW & ECU before returning to Wingate as head coach.
She is the daughter of Mrs. Lou Hancock and the late Tom Hancock of Elizabethtown, NC.
