Smog is a cloud made up of different particles in suspension. This cloud can emit harmful consequences not only for health but also for the environment.

The word Smog has its origin in the union of the English words smoke and fog. Its opacity and odor mainly characterize dirty haze. Some of these particles are carbon dioxide, smoke, dust, and soot.

Fog is defined as the liquid finely suspended in the air. However, pollutant fog or Smog is fog mixing with other types of particles and substances found in the air. When combined, these particles form different chemical reactions that result in the creation of a toxic body. This gaseous body expands and can be transported by the wind, like a cloud.

Smog refers to the polluted haze generally found in cities. This is due to the high concentration of gases and particles. According to NatGeo, “Smog is common in big cities with a lot of industry and traffic. Cities located in basins surrounded by mountains may have smog problems because the Smog is trapped in the valley and cannot be carried away by wind.”

The creation of Smog lies in air pollution. However, industrial activities are one of the leading causes. Some of these activities are car emission, coal burning, and constant factory management. Exceeding regulations and emission controls in production facilities can be hazardous to people’s health.

Different aspects can alternate the damage or harm of Smog to people. According to the EnergyEducation website, some effects of Smog can include:

  • Eye, nose, and throat irritation.
  • Decreased lung function
  • Worsening of respiratory or heart diseases.
  • In some cases, death

On the other hand, the environment and nature are also affected by Smog. The mixture of these particles turns out to be a significant pollutant. One of the main affected is the atmosphere. The density and toxicity of gases weaken the ozone layer daily.
