BaseballFreshman Scott Bowen pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 6 batters to lead West Bladen to a 5-3 Four County Conference baseball victory at Pender Monday night.

Bowen out-dueled Pender’s senior ace Cameron Guertin who struck out 12 Knights. Guertin has signed to play at St. Andrews College next season.

Senior Trevor Lesane doubled to left-field in the West Bladen first inning and scooted home when senior catcher Colby McLean cracked a single.

The Patriots tied the game 1-1 in the home half of the first, but West Bladen went back on top with a 3-run third inning. Sophomore Weston Pidgeon drew a walk, and Jeremy Hunt’s sacrifice bunt moved him to second base.

Lesane knocked in Pidgeon with a single to put West Bladen back on top 2-1. McLean reached base on an error, and McLean’s courtesy runner, Malcolm Vaught, stole second base. Lesane stole home on the back end of the double-steal with Vaught.

Sophomore Trent West blasted a triple off the fence in center-field to drive in Vaught and stretch the lead to 4-1.

McLean belted a single in the fifth inning, and Vaught, McLean’s courtesy runner, stole second base and was balked to third base. An error on West’s ground ball plated Vaught and upped the count to 5-1.

Pender scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Lesane batted 2-4 with a run batted in and 2 runs scored. McLean also finished 2-4 at the plate with a run batted in, and his courtesy runner, Vaught, scored twice. West hammered the rbi triple, and juniors Hunt and Donald McCullom added one hit each.

Guertin and Blansett led the Pender hitters with one hit each.

Coach Kim Cain’s Knights improved to 6-5 in the conference and 8-7 overall and will travel to Clinton tonight (Tuesday) for a 6:30 game.
