WASHINGTON – Robeson County Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) on Wednesday hosted Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin as part of ongoing efforts to secure full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe.

Congressman Pittenger and Chairman Godwin met with House Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop (UT-01) to urge the scheduling of a committee hearing on Congressman Pittenger’s Lumbee Recognition Act (H.R. 3650) this fall, which would be the next step in moving the legislation toward a vote.

“The Lumbee Tribe has sought full federal recognition since 1888.  They deserve the same recognition and benefits as other federally-recognized tribes,” said Congressman Pittenger. “This is about fairness and providing equal opportunities to encourage economic growth.”
