Zach Meares batted 3-3 with 2 triples and A. J. Smith slugged a 2-run home run to lead the Tigers to a 10-7 victory over the Gators in Bladen County Dixie Boys Baseball League action at County Park Wednesday night.
The Gators’ Jake Evans and the Tigers’ Ethan Johnson pitched 2 scoreless innings each until the Tigers broke through with 4 runs in the top of the third. Johnson led off with a single but was retired at second on Drew Sholar’s fielder’s choice.
Meares ripped a double to left-centerfield that scored Sholar. Jared Piland slammed a double to centerfield that drove in Meares. Greyson Clark reached base on an infield hit, and a throwing error on the play scored Piland. Clark later scored the fourth run of the inning.
Johnson drew a 2-out walk in the Tiger fourth, and Sholar laced a single to leftfield. Meares blasted a triple to rightfield that scored Johnson and Sholar. Piland walked, before Clark swatted a single to rightfield that scored Meares. Walks to Cameron Flowers and Jayson Baxter forced home Piland and stretched the Tiger lead to 8-0.
The Gators rallied for 6 runs in the home half of the fourth. Brady Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch, and Cody Butler smashed a double to left-centerfield. Jacob Priest lined a double to rightfield that scored Hollingsworth and Butler.
Zach Butler smacked a single to left that scored Priest, and Jay McGill drew a walk. Xavier McKoy then crushed a 3-run home run into the trees behind the rightfield fence.
Wes Landreth drew a 2-out walk in the Tiger sixth inning, and Smith hammered an inside-the-park home run over the rightfielder’s head that scored Landreth and pushed the Tiger lead to 10-6.
The Gators scored once in the home half of the seventh as Priest clubbed double to rightfield and raced home on a throwing error to trim the margin to 10-7.
Johnson pitched 3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Clark relieved Johnson in the fourth, and Meares came on to pitch the final 2 innings. Evans, Priest and Hollingsworth saw action on the mound for the Gators.
Meares drove in 3 runs with his 3 hits and scored twice. Clark finished 3-4 at the plate with an rbi and a run scored. Johnson batted 2-3 with a triple, and a run scored.
Sholar was 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Piland smashed the rbi double and scored twice, Smith launched the 2-run homer, and Landreth singled and scored a run. Baxter had an rbi.
Priest batted 2-2 with 2 doubles, 2 rbi’s and 2 runs scored. McKoy blasted the 3-run homer, and Cody Butler doubled and scored a run. Zach Butler added an rbi single, and Hollingsworth and McGill scored runs.
